Techne Music is proud to announce that as of 2014,
it is currently a 501(c)3 non profit organization!

Techne Music is a festival for highly advanced violin, viola, cello, piano and composition students. Faculty and students come from institutions such as the Juilliard School of Music and the London College of Music. Our special guest list has brought some of the leading soloists in the classical music world to perform and work with the students at Techne Music.

    Forms for live auditions must be received by February 15, 2014.
    Forms submitted with DVD’s or Youtube links can be sent with the audition material.
    Youtube links can include a scanned form with the email.
    All applications require a $25 non-refundable check made out to “Techne Music”. Checks can be mailed to the following address found on the bottom of this form.

    One chamber or solo piano piece submitted as a pdf or Sibelius file. Midi files should also be submitted if possible. All files should be sent to with a subject heading “Composition Application”. Deadline for submission is March 15, 2014. Application forms and a $25 application fee are also required.

    Festival Activities

    All instrumentalists will have private lessons, chamber coaching, chamber orchestra, and technique classes. The Techne Chamber Orchestra will perform the Four Seasons by both Vivaldi and Piazzolla with Baltimore Symphony Concertmaster Jonathan Carney. Other events include lectures on various musical topics and a student chamber music concert. Select students and chamber ensembles will work with violist Steven Tenenbom and violinist Jonathan Carney in a public masterclass. Public concerts by Techne Music Faculty and special guests will also occur during the festival.

    Composition students will have two daily seminars with London College of Music Professor David Osbon. Topics include the following:

    1. Messiaen to Stockhausen : from modes of limited transposition to the Vibration on Vibration theory
    2. British new music #1 : Sir Harrison Birtwistle and Sir Peter Maxwell Davies
    3. British new music #2 : Oliver Knussen, Mark Anthony Turnage and current trends
    4. Electro:acoustic composition, a European perspective : focussing on the music of Jonathan Harvey, Trevor Wishart and Kaija Saariaho
    5. Influential trends in European new music : Tristan Murail, Pascal Dusapin and spectral composition, Louis Andriesen and European minimalism, John Tavener, Arvo Part and the mystics
    6. Architechtonic techniques applied to pitch generation, harmony and form
    7. Motivic transformation techniques with an emphasis on large scale orchestral music
    8. Chordal rotation and closed chord structures
    9. Algorithmic composition
    10. Timbre as a primary parameter

    In addition to this, composition students will receive daily individual sessions for 30 minutes. The focus of their composition during the festival will be a short work for violin and piano. Students will be working closely with the Anglo-American Duo, who will perform and record the student compositions during the festival.
